If you like mesmerizing night skies, Sedona is that otherworldly place you need to see. And likewise, our guide to the best places to stargaze in Sedona will make sure every night there memorable.
Stargazing in Sedona is magical. I didn’t know what to expect the first time I looked up at the night sky. There were so many stars, and I had never seen so many in one place before! Sedona is actually an International Dark Sky Community, a designation given to only 20 Dark Sky Communities in the world.
Skies are clear most nights, except during Monsoon season (July through September) and the light pollution is incredibly low. Most all of Arizona is also very low in humidity. Sedona is too, which increases visibility of the night sky.
How to Stargaze in Sedona

You have two options for stargazing here. You can do self-guided stargazing or can reserve a spot in a guided tour, which I highly recommend. For guided tours, Evening Sky Tours/Sedona Stargazing is king. Tours are limited to 12 people or less and led by professional astronomers. They point out constellations in the sky with a laser pointer, then allow you to use their state-of-the-art telescopes to learn about the celestial bodies in the sky. Spots fill up fast so make a reservation in advance.
Other guided options are attending a star party that is open to the public. Sedona astronomy club, Sirius Lookers have star parties that are open to the public. Contact them directly for upcoming parties.
In addition, Astronomers of Verde Valley hold many star parties throughout the year at Red Rock State Park in Sedona. Upcoming events are listed on their website.
If you want to opt for stargazing on your own, there are a few places that are perfect for seeing stars. Check out these locations:
Airport Mesa
Airport Mesa is a top spot for stargazing in Sedona. It’s easy to reach and offers stunning views of both the landscape and the night sky.
The view from the top is amazing, especially at sunset. As the sun goes down, you’ll see the red rocks change color. Then, as darkness falls, the stars come out to play.
Here’s what makes Airport Mesa great for stargazing:
- Easy access: You can drive right up to the viewing area.
- Panoramic views: You can see the entire red rock area from here.
- Open sky: There’s nothing to block your view of the stars.
To make the most of your visit:
- Arrive before sunset to watch the sky change.
- Bring a jacket. It gets cold quickly after sunset.
- Use a stargazing app to help identify constellations.
Remember, Airport Mesa isn’t just for nighttime. During the day, you can see famous Sedona landmarks like Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock from here.
Two Trees Observing Area

This place is popular with Sirius Lookers. There is a field located off State Highway 89A near the intersection of Forest Road 525A and Forest Road 761B. You can pull off here and set up with a chair and blanket. Don’t forget a red flashlight and give yourself some time for your eyes to adjust to the dark.
Jordan Trailhead Observing Area

There is a parking area and a large field at the end of West Park Ridge Drive. Note that this is a dirt road that can sandy at times or muddy during the rainy season. It should be passable for most cars, but I suggest checking the area out during the day to see the conditions of the road before heading out at night.
Most of the other trails in the area are perfect for stargazing, too.

Baldwin Trail is a favorite because you see views of Cathedral Rock. If you enjoy astrophotography and visit in the Winter months, you will see the milky way over Cathedral Rock. It is breathtaking! To get here, you have to access it through Oak Creek. The trailhead and parking are located on Verde Valley School Road beyond Turkey Creek Trailhead. You can also get shots of the milky way over Cathedral Rock by setting up at Red Rock Crossing or Crescent Moon Picnic Site.
